Fall is an extremely important time for promoting turf recovery and health. Fall applications of nitrogen are significant factor in promoting turfgrass growth. By promoting growth, damaged turf fills in voided or thin areas. Nitrogen enhances root growth, which at this time is critical. Root to shoot growth ratio is the greatest during fall. In addition, nitrogen helps reduce the severity of fall diseases including rust and dollar spot. There are no 'silver bullets' when it comes to managing summer patch. Cultural practices aimed at reducing turfgrass stress and promoting healthy root development are needed. Where overseeding is used, many of the newly released Kentucky bluegrass varieties offer resistance to summer patch. On the positive side of life, thanks to the “can do” attitude of our wife/Mom Susan, and the generosity of many people, our weekend fund raiser collected over two thousand dollars for the MS Society.

Enjoy September
