FERTILIZER -We continue to move along with the task of applying fertilizer and weed control to your lawns. As we noted in a past newsletter we are following a program of two split applications of crab grass control and fertilizer. With the heavy rains experienced in April and May, this has been a sound decision.
WEED CONTROL – In Indiana, as in most states, people who are hired to apply weed control on lawns must be licensed. At Matt’s, we are licensed in Indiana and Illinois. These license require more than just a fee, they require a combination of testing and or continuing education credits; it’ a serious responsibility. In applying weed control, among other things, we must be aware of DRIFT, the potential of herbicide to be blown away due to wind, VOLITIZATION, the potential of herbicide to rise into the air when temperatures are high and RAIN, which can limit effectiveness. With this explanation, we acknowledge that we would like to be further along with weed control applications than we actually are. On some days we have sprayed
in the morning but not in the afternoon as situations change. Yes, you may have seen a company spraying lawns in hot weather, or on hot windy days and if you pay attention you no doubt have smelled their herbicide in the air.
We will make our applications in an environmentally responsible fashion and ask for your patience. Thank you for your understanding.
Do you need all of those bags? A question from a customer when they noticed the multiple bags of fertilizer on the back of our truck. The answer…Yes! The 25-2-5 is fertilizer with crabgrass control, the 19-19-19, fertilizer for lawns with the need for nitrogen and additional phosphorus and potassium, the 18-24-12, for newly seeded lawns and 0-0-50 for lawns that have soils that are deficient in phosphorus. How do we know? Soil Testing

Have a question about your lawn? Include it with your monthly payment and we may address it in next month’s newsletter.
We have seen more than one example of Roundup or something like it being used on customer’s lawns. Their commercials can be deceiving as they note how the product kills weeds. But, it also kills all vegetation including grass. So Roundup, anything described as a glysophate or a non-selective herbicide should only be applied to areas where you want to kill everything!
We may be adding to our staff. Candidates must have a clean driving record and experience with a commercial landscaping company. We desire at a minimum experience of installing sod, bushes and trees and trimming bushes. Candidates should contact our office.
